Nasiruddin’s stories are famous for humour. They became popular because they deal with the experiences of day-to-day life.

I liked the second anecdote, the one about the farmer, the most. I liked it because Nasiruddin’s response to the farmer’s comment on his turban and illiteracy was quite witty.

The point of laughter in the last story was Nasiruddin’s smart reply at the end. When the neighbor noticed Nasiruddin’s donkey braying in the stable, he pointed it out to Nasiruddin, who had said that he had lent it out already. He shut the door in his neighbor’s face and said that a man who believed the word of a donkey instead of his did not deserve to be lent anything.

When the thieves ransacked Nasiruddin’s house and asked him why he was hiding in a cupboard, Nasiruddin treated them with unexpected respect by saying he was hiding out of shame for having nothing worthy of them in his house.

When Nasiruddin was stealing from someone’s kitchen garden, the man demanded what he was doing here. Nasiruddin explained that wind blew him here. When asked who uprooted the vegetables, he replied that he grabbed a hold of them to stop himself from being swept along in the wind. Finally, the gardener asked him how the vegetables ended up in Nasiruddin’s sack, he said that that was what he was wondering about when the gardener interrupted him. 

Yes, I have come across a humorous person like Nasiruddin. That person was our neighbor until recently. He was in his early thirties, unlike Nasiruddin, who seems to be older in the stories.

The greatest similarities between Nasiruddin and our old neighbor are their quick wit and ability to find humor in grave situations. Like Nasiruddin, our old neighbor made unexpected jokes. People either really enjoyed his presence or disliked him greatly, because he spared no one with his quick answers. Reading stories about Nasiruddin reminded me of our old neighbor a lot.

In the tales about Nasiruddin, we can see that he had been many different things — a tailor, a merchant, a doctor, and a judge. He had also travelled widely. He was an eccentric person, with sharp wit and unconventional actions. In the first story, he lent his cloak to his friend and somehow always managed to bring attention to it despite his friend asking him not to. In the second story, Nasiruddin wore a turban although he was illiterate.

When the farmer pointed that out, Nasiruddin placed his turban on the farmer’s head and told him to read. These two stories show that he never failed to prove his point, even if the way he did so was strange. In the third story, with his daughters, Nasiruddin’s witty comment on their situation shows that he said things that were on everyone’s mind without hesitation.

Similarly, in all the stories, his responses have been quick and sharp. He always found a way to do what he wanted to. Stories about him are very amusing to read. Nasiruddin was a hilarious person, always finding himself in unexpected situations and giving surprising responses to the people around him.
