Coeducation in English essay Coeducation, as the word expresses, means the education of boys and girls commonly in schools and colleges.
Meaning of Co-education
Co-education means the education of boys and girls in the same schools, colleges or Universities. This is a modern concept and it has made a remarkable. rapid progress. It was first introduced in Switzerland, but now it has become popular almost in all Europe and America. The Eastern countries are also adopting this system gradually. In our country, opinions sharply differ on the issue of co-education in colleges.
Arguments in Favour of Co-education
The supporters of Co-education favour it namely on two grounds. One economical and other sociological. In the first place, they say that co-education is an economic measure in a poor country like Pakistan. It is not possible to maintain separate colleges for boys and girls. Especially the vocational colleges. A lot of money is required to equip the libraries, laboratories and workshops.
In the second place, the social contacts between the members of the two sexes are useful in many respects. The supporters of co-education say that if boys and girls are educated together, they will develop in them a sort of mutual understanding. This understanding will be helpful in their future life as men and women. They believe that Co-education makes boys less coarse and girls less morbid. The boys become civilized and polite and the girls get rid of their shyness. Moreover, it creates a spirit of competition in studies. Both try their hard to outdo each other.
Arguments against Co-education
The arguments of the supporters are weighty but those who are against them are weightier. Demerits of this system make its success in this country doubtful. The opponents of co-education argue that in a hot country like Pakistan, this system is impracticable.
Here boys and girls become young at an early age. Youth is blind and there is every possibility that they may fall a victim to their emotions. Then every one of us knows that the ends and aims of education for the two sexes are quite different. Their demands in education are different from each other and therefore it is false economy to teach them in the same institution. Again in Pakistan, colleges are very few and they are overcrowded. Co-education can prove economical only in
such cases where the number of students in the college is very small. Moreover, we must remember that Islam disallows the free mixing of boys and girls. It is for these reasons, the opponents of Co-education think that the system is not fit for our country.
To conclude we may say that Co-education is above objection in professional colleges where the ultimate goal of all the students is the same. But in art and science colleges where the two sexes are prepared for the normal routine of life, Co-education is unnecessary.

THE FUTURE OF ENGLISH IN PAKISTAN Essay
Arguments to Expel English
There has been a great fuss in recent years about replacing English with the national language. Some of our educationists have been advocating immediate steps to expel English from this country. They offer four reasons in support of their view. First, they say that no nation can achieve the highest creativity in a foreign language.
They mean to say that no creative work is possible except in the mother tongue. Secondly, translation of the latest scientific books can enrich Urdu. Hence no need for English. Thirdly, English is doing harm to the cause of the national language. Lastly, much of the time of our students is wasted in learning English.
Criticism of arguments against English
The arguments against English are not based on deep thought and can be refused. First, history does not support the view that creative work in a foreign language is not possible. Sir Isaac Newton’s great book ‘Principal’ was written in Latin and not in his mother tongue English. Many creative works of high quality were written by the Persians, the Turks, and the Central Asians, not in their mother tongue but in Arabic.
Farab, Al Beruni, Bu Ali Seina, Ghazzali. Nasiruddin Tusi and Shah. Waliullah were non-Arabs but wrote their masterpieces in Arabic. Allama Iqbal delivered his famous lectures in English.
Secondly, real knowledge cannot be gained through translations. Translators stand between the students and the author and the accuracy of the concept. The advanced students are denied access to the original source. Then, knowledge is growing at a tremendous pace from volume to volume.
By the time, a publication is translated at least half a dozen books on the subject will have appeared. All our time and money will be wasted on translations. Thirdly English has never done any harm to the national languages.
The best creative and valuable work in our national or regional languages has been done by those who were masters of English. As such our vernacular language are indebted to those who have command over the English language. Lastly, it is our urgent need to be thoroughly conversant with one advanced foreign language, be it Russian, German, French or English.
The study of at least one foreign language is compulsory even in advanced countries If we abolish English and try to learn another language, it will waste more time. We have background books and teachers in English.
Importance of English
We may not like English on the sentimental ground but there are many reasons to retain English in our society till our own languages are rich. English is an international language and we need it at every step. It is a gate to the acquisition of knowledge in science and technology.
Moreover, English has its roots deep in our society. It cannot be done away with so soon. English has been the official language for more than two centuries in our country.
It is still used by the executive and the judiciary throughout the country. In many universities, it is used as the medium of instruction in cities as well as in towns, lawyers, doctors, teachers and other educated persons employ this language for communication of ideas. “It remains the language of our educated classes. As a matter of fact, it has helped in shaping the minds, outlooks and opinions of our people.
Attachment of English
Our intelligentsia has a deep attachment to English. The importance of national language cannot be denied, but who is going to give these languages the place they deserve. Those who can enrich these languages do not come forward. Our educationists and writers remained busy raising slogans for the national language. They could not produce something creative and valuable during the last 50 years. As long as the educated class is under the influence of English the National language cannot take the place of English. i.e for many more years to come.

WOMAN’S PLACE IN OUR SOCIETY BS ESSAY
In the near past, women were considered inferior to men. They were debarred from taking part in social life. Their sphere of activities was limited to domestic (41) work. Up to the 19th century, it was believed that women were the servants of the homes of their husbands. In those days, women were not allowed to take part in politics and social life and administration.
Rousseau, the French philosopher, who was never married, once said: “The dignity of woman consists in being unknown to the world, her glory is the esteem of her husband; her pleasure the happiness of her family. But time created new situations and the old outlook underwent a change.
The part played by Women in Present Age
Quite recently, women have come to take a more and more prominent part in many spheres of life. In some respects, they have excelled over men. In sports, intellectual and artistic pursuits, in office and industry. they have set a new record of honesty and efficiency.
They have succeeded marvellously as teachers and nurses. Goldsmith, the famous poet and writer made a complaint two centuries ago: “Women famed for their velour, their skills in politics or their learning have left the duties of their own sex, in order to invade the privilege of ours. “This is what the women are doing today.
There is practically no field where women are not competing with men. In business, trade, industry, in the learned profession in politics, administration, scientific research, and literary and artistic activities. Eve is making herself feel everywhere. They are police and military officers. They are working as salesgirls, as air hostesses and as clerks and steno-typists.
They are turning out men from the field personal secretaries, As the days pass, we have to get more and more used to the idea of seeing women working side by side with men, in riding, driving, flying, playing, even fighting, Even in Pakistan, we have women athletes, writers, leaders, administrators.
They are fast discarding purdah and taking part in outdoor life. Law has given women status equal to that of men. In nearly every democratic country, women have the right to vote. They are claiming better rights to property.
Women should not take part in Public Life
Many thinkers including most Muslims, do not like the idea of women taking an active part in public life and in the profession. They argue that biologically. women’s functions are different from men’s. She has to be a mother, women are not suitable for every job. They are too delicate to perform arduous duties of life. The real greatness of a woman lies in her role as a mother. It is rightly said, “the hand that rocks the cradle” rules the world. The mother who can bring up the right sort of children is really a great benefactor of society.
Islamic society gives a very respectable position to women. The Holy Prophet has said, “Verily the paradise lies under the feet of your mother”. It is a mother that can best serve the nation.
But it is clear that women will not return to their homes. The modern woman argues that she can be a good mother and at the same time, a good doctor or writer or administrator. As Susan. B. Anthony, a famous woman worker says, “Modern invention have banished the spinning wheel and the same law of progress makes the woman of today a different woman from her grandmother.\
STUDENTS AND POLITICS Essay
All Over the world, students try to poke their nose into politics. In Pakistan and India, student politics is a big problem. It causes many headaches for the leaders and the Government of the country. The root cause of students’ participation in politics lies in the historical background of our struggle for freedom. Now the question is whether students should take part in politics or not The issue is controversial some are in favour of students’ participation in politics and some are against it. Let us examine their arguments.
Arguments to Take Part in Politics
Those who hold that students should take part in politics have four arguments to offer. First, students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. It is necessary that they should get more training in active politics along with their studies. This would make their education realistic and practical. They would learn to shoulder the responsibilities of life in future. Secondly, students are the citizens of their country. They have a duty and a right to see that the country is governed well. This is not possible without taking part in politics. Thirdly, students belong to no party and their approach to politics will be impartial.
They can speak freely against the corrupt government and selfish Politicians. Lastly, young blood in politics invigorates it. Elderly people are cool-minded, and youngmen are enthusiastic. Radical changes need daring steps, courage and zeal. If politics is left to the old, it suffers from inertia and stagnation.
Arguments against Student’s Indulgence
Those who are against students’ indulgence ( in politics have three arguments to support their view. First, politics is a serious and exciting occupation. The pursuit of study and politics are two different things. If students get involved in politics, their studies are ignored and their careers ruined In this way, they cause a great national loss. They fail to come up to the expectations of their parents. Secondly. politics in the modern world is a hard job. It requires experience. Wisdom, tolerance and patience.
Students being young lack these qualities. They are not fully mature No doubt, they are nation builders, but they should not start this nation-building at such an early stage. Thirdly, students are young and rash. They can be very easily exploited by experienced politicians. They are easily swept off by the tide of catchy slogans raised by the politicians. In this way, they help politicians in exploiting the masses.
Both views are too extreme. Students’ participation bears good to society but there is the danger of their falling victims to fortune seekers. In our country, the common man is illiterate (fib) or busy earning his bread. Students are the only sections that can represent him but it should have some limits. They should study politics, discuss matters and express their views freely. But they should avoid practical policies unless it is very necessary. They should prepare themselves for the future. In this way, they can play their role in politics without any risk to their studies and career.
